Song Of The Week: ‘Crush Story’ By Too Much Joy

This week, NPR Music writer and editor Stephen Thompson introduces us to the band Too Much Joy, which has just re-released its 1991 album “Cereal Killers.”

Thompson says Too Much Joy was one of the bands that introduced him and his friends to stranger, more creative music when he was young. One of his favorite tracks off the album is “Crush Story.”

“When Too Much Joy started making records, it was a very important band — a bridge to weirder music than we were accustomed to hearing. This particular song, ‘Crush Story,’ is an absolute staple if you’re making a mix tape for someone you’re just getting to know and like.”

Thompson says it captures the excitement of a having a crush.

“It just nails what it’s like to feel crushed out. It’s not a rational feeling. It’s not love. It’s not, really even fraught with any kind of tension. The chorus has all those wonderful lines about how having a crush on someone is better than love.”
