St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City served as a shelter during the devastating tornado.

Students from the nearby high schools, which were on lockdown during the storm, were bused to the church after the storm passed.

“And I will say I was really glad for that because my son was one of those students,” the church’s pastor D.A. Bennett told Here & Now.

Although Bennett’s church helped reunite families, he received a call that a mother who attended his church, and her five-month-old baby, were among those who died while sheltering in a 7-Eleven convenience store.

The mother had gone to pick up her baby from day care.

Pastor D.A. Bennett has been asked to preside over the mother and child’s funeral.

“As people of faith, we do not grieve without hope,” Bennett said. “We’re going to walk together through this. It is not something you can walk through alone.”
