Guns, Immigration On Congress Agenda

Two key senators, Democrat Joe Manchin of Virginia and Republican Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania are reportedly close to an agreement to expand background checks for gun buyers.

Senate aides say the two senators are talking about requiring background checks for gun sales online and at gun shows, but with exclusions for sales between close relatives and friends, and for temporary transfers between hunters.

Also on Congress’s agenda this week is immigration reform, with political leaders waiting for the Senate’s bipartisan “Gang of Eight” to release its long-awaited agreement legislation.

Meantime, President Barack Obama is set to release his budget this week.

It’s two months late, but will reportedly include the White House’s proposal to cut entitlement spending by changing the way cost-of-living increases are calculated.

It could make President Obama the first sitting Democratic president to propose cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
