A Closer Look At Sheldon Adelson, The Billionaire Backing Gingrich

Billionaire Sheldon Adelson. (AP)

Sheldon Adelson is the Boston-born son of a poor cab driver who’s made billions in the casino industry and become a major player in Israeli-American politics.

Late last week he provided longtime friend Newt Gingrich with an 11th-hour infusion of $5 million that’s enabled the Gingrich superPAC Winning Our Future to run television ads featuring clips from a still-to-be-released documentary that criticizes rival Mitt Romney’s career buying up and sometimes shutting down companies at Bain Capital.

Brian Mooney of the Boston Globe says that if you take it a step further, super PAC contributions like Adelson’s could give the wealthy even more clout with Congress.

“You could have an instance where wealthy businesspeople could literally decide ‘I’m taking out that member of Congress or that Senator'” because they don’t support legislation they want, he said.
