House Republicans Reject Deal To Extend Tax Cuts

The Republican-led house voted Tuesday to block passage of the Senate payroll tax cut extension.

Republican and Democratic leaders had negotiated a two month extension which sailed through the Senate. But the deal enraged House conservatives like Eric Cantor, who called it “an attempt to kick the can down the road.”

With Tuesday’s vote, House Republicans have sent the bill back to the Senate for new negotiations, even though fellow Republicans like Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts had said that “scuttling the deal is irresponsible and wrong.”

Without an agreement on the extension, over 160 million American workers will face higher taxes in January.
