The end of the year movie awards season has begun and the indie film “Beginners” has been picking up plaudits. The film won Best Ensemble and shared Best Picture with Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” at the Gotham Independent Awards.

“Beginners” has also been nominated for four Independent Spirit awards, including two for writer-director Mike Mills, and one for Christopher Plummer as Best Supporting Actor.

Plummer is generating buzz as a possible Oscar nominee, he’s also been honored by the Los Angeles Film Critics for his work on the film. In “Beginners” he plays Hal, a retired art historian who, at the age of 75, tells his son Oliver that he’s gay.

We revisit our conversation with “Beginners” writer-director Mike Mills, who told us that the role of Hal was based on his father, who also came out late in life.
