In Kabul, Afghanistan Monday, security forces killed a would-be suicide bomber outside the venue for this week’s meeting of regional leaders and power brokers.

The traditional meeting, called a Loya Jirga, has been targeted by insurgents in the past.

This one is expected to include about 2,000 participants, who will discuss efforts to reconcile with the Taliban and the future relationship with the United States, which plans to withdraw its troops in 2014.

At this time in 2001, U.S. special forces were on the ground in Afghanistan, taking control of cities like Kabul and Jalabad from the Taliban.

The BBC’s Mike Thomson reports on current Afghan attitudes toward the presence of foreign troops, ten years after the war there began.
