Speaking to a supporter during his bus tour through the Midwest this week, President Obama said he would announce “a very specific plan to boost the economy, to create jobs and to control our deficit.”

But there are reports of a strong debate within the White House over the approach and specifics of the plan, to be revealed in September.

Some aides are said to be arguing for a more combative stance that calls Republicans out on economic issues.  Others, like  senior political adviser David Plouffe, are making the case for a continuation of the president’s strategy of compromise to appeal to independent voters.
