The Past And Future Of Hip Hop

As hot as hip hop music and culture is these days, it’s hard to believe hip hop itself is, well, middle-aged.

According to the book “Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey,” the musical style, and the breakdancing, the dj-ing and graffiti writing associated with hip-hop, came out of New York City in the 1970s.

But one Philadelphia-based choreographer who’s been around since the early days, says he’s still looking forward.

Brandon “Peace” Albright danced behind hip hop icons LL Cool J and Will Smith. He was also an original member of the company that’s considered the grandfather of organized hip hop dance companies, Rennie Harris Puremovement.

These days Albright is running his own dance company, Illstyle and Peace Productions, trying to take hip hop dance to a new place.

One way that Albright is pushing hip hop forward, is through the program “Dancing in the Street.” This program puts together free public performances on the streets on New York City.

Guest:

  • Brandon “Peace” Albright, hip-hop dance instructor and performance artist
