Door To Door Fuller Brush Man Keeps Selling

Here & Now Guest:

  • Norman Hall, the self-proclaimed last Fuller Brush man in San Francisco

The Fuller Brush man was an icon in the 1940s and 50s. The door-to-door salesmen of personal and home cleaning products inspired many songs, movies, and plays.

Although that era has come and gone, at least one Fuller Brush man remains.

Norman Hall says he is San Francisco’s last Fuller Brush man, and he said the Internet has changed some things about his job, but not how he dresses for work.

“I always wear a bow-tie. My father used to call it a sartorial smile,” he told Here & Now’s Robin Young. “I’ve known people through their children and grandchildren…if someone talks about a cat, I have things pet owners can use, if they have problems with their floors, my mind will go to dust mops.”
