Lawmakers Debate Cuts: From Planned Parenthood To EPA Funding

House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio kept the House in session today in an attempt to send a completed spending bill to the Senate before adjourning for the holiday weekend. (AP)

Putting off a scheduled holiday, the Republican-led House of Representatives continued debate today on dozens of measures to cut spending in the current federal budget.

House Speaker John Boehner says he hopes to send a completed spending bill to the Senate by this weekend, even as newly elected Republican House members continue to push for deeper cuts in every part of the budget, including:

  • Funds for Planned Parenthood to provide health services to poor women
  • Tuition assistance for low-income students
  • Heating assistance for the poor
  • Some foreign aid
  • Funds for the Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Communications Commission.

We have an update with Gail Chaddock, Capitol Hill Correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor.
