Bahrain’s military took control of the country’s capital after a violent pre-dawn raid on peaceful demonstrators in the city’s Pearl Square.

At least five people are dead and there are reports that hundreds of wounded have been taken to the city’s main hospital with gaping wounds, broken bones, and pulmonary shock from tear gas.

It’s a change from early in the week, when the government avoided a widespread crackdown, and the King of Bahrain even apologized for a brief spate of government violence. We have an update with Michael Slackman of the New York Times who’s on the spot.
